Seriously fucking trash. This is the complete and utter GARBAGE that a $3 trillion marketcap monolopy under captalism has brought us? Word has only gotten WORSE since 2003, with more and more features and capabilities removed. Libre Office is now better, where’s its 3 trillion dollar marketcap? Rational markets my ass.

The 2 have overlapping but distinct purposes.

Obsidian manages directories of mostly plain text files. It has a huge number of plugins that allow manipulation of the text files. The emphasis is strongly on structure between and within documents. There is very little here to control how a file would look when printed. I am not even sure if printing is possible without installing something. Obsidian is about collections of files.

LibreOffice is an office suite. One of its components is Writer which is word processor and probably what is being discussed here. Most people use it more as a document layout software. Though it is able to work with document structure like creating a table of contents from headings, or manipulate data like incorporating excel spreadsheet in a mailmerge. The end goal is to create a document that is printable and to control that. You mostly work with files 1 at a time. The file format is much more complex to allow for all the details of page layout.

If you are not creating documents to be printed for the most part, stick with obsidian. It is more flexible.

Also worth saying that libreoffice is free libre and open source software. Obsidian is proprietary although there is a large open source community around it. Zettlr and Joplin are floss alternatives. I prefer obsidian personally.

I’ve used both Obsidian and Libre Office (and Microsoft Word). I almost always prefer the latter two but that’s probably because I have more experience with those sorts of word processors and as a result it takes me a relatively long time to format anything complex on Obsidian. If you want to use something like Word, then try out Libre Office Writer. If Obsidian works just fine for your needs, I don’t see why you should switch over.

I know right, I still haven’t been able to abuse Word so hard as I did when I was still in school. Back then you could do CRAAAAAAZY shit like manually adjust borders for each line. Now you have a million different rulers and none of them do anything. I get these assignment cover sheets for my exams, and they alternate the border width each page like they are planning to print it and put it in a binder, and try as I might, I cannot for the life of me find a way to turn this off. Now I just copy-paste everything to a different doc without the same page setup. It feels like I am always trying to trick Word and Excel into doing what I want them to do. Infinitely nested double negative sumproducts instead of sumifs, blow my brains out.
