  • I’m not a gamer but a while ago I got a powkiddy v90 after asking a similar question it was recommended. I agonized over it and did some reading about different systems but in the end I didn’t find anything better. Well actually a device called Miyoo Mini at a similar price was universally reviewed as somewhat superior specs-wise, but it is too small it looked uncomfortable to use so I didn’t want it. But if you don’t think you will get cramped hands maybe consider it.

After that there is a big jump in price and of course things get better from there; but I wasn’t interested in spending hundreds or thousands. Only tens.

For the v90: The default interface is really confusing. I was glad the first thing I did was clone the sd card because the second thing I did was accidentally delete a bunch of stuff by pressing the wrong button in the interface after booting it up. It’s hard to find things in there. The main games I want to play are mario and either they aren’t included or I can’t find them. I’m sure children would figure it out in no time but adults may struggle like me.

There is widespread support for using an alternative ROM, and for beginners it’s the Miyoo ROM actually. I ran into some technical issues so I didn’t get it done yet. (They are my own issues on my computer nothing to do with the ROM or the device.) I have high hope that one I get some time to return to this it will be muchly improved.

Prior to looking into this I got one of the $10 ali express devices that can’t be customized at all and I really liked it. Only problem was you can’t save your game progress so eventually it got boring starting from the beginning every time.

In terms of family which you mention, when I was doing research I came across some people making a really interesting/funny point: an offline gaming device is a way of shielding children from social media. You are giving them a screen to use but it’s one that prevents all the creepy/toxic shit found on the platforms. In a way it is extremely constrained. I found this to be pretty compelling.

  • How curious. Are you doing a play?

You might have to DIY one if you don’t want an old one. Certainly there are websites you could upload a PDF to that would print for you.

I think the boxes made sense when they were for sale in a brick n mortar store because they are harder to steal and make the person feel like they are buying something when digital goods weren’t such an instinctive idea. I doubt they would be shipped because they are big for no reason and would require a lot of packaging to keep from getting wrecked in transit vs a USB key in a bubble envelope.

To buy linux in a box, you would have to find somewhere near you that is selling it in person. A computer store, a book store. Maybe a campus bookstore? They have a captive audience so sometimes can get away with stuff that doesn’t otherwise make business sense.

There is a keyboard shortcut to reload the config. I don’t remember what the default is. On the kitty website, go to the page about kitty.conf and ctrl-f reload or refresh.

To check that the config is really reloading, make an edit to the section about theme, tab style, etc.

There is a way to output the actual config as used so you can look for your settings.

If you call kitty from the command line you can optionally use an argument to specify a config file. Iirc it is --config but verify in docs.

What is the location of the config file you are editing?

Post the section of the config file that isn’t working?

Try moving the section you are editing to the very bottom of the file to ensure it isn’t getting over rided later on.

  • What do you mean by ghosted? They don’t respond to an email? The prior thread was posted 13 days ago and it sounded at that time you hadn’t yet contacted them. So I guess it has been less than 13 days.

You said you aren’t in a hot shop that it is a long term situation. So there isnt a hurry.

Unless you were supposed to meet up and they no showed or something. That would be another story.

Did you find any other good candidate unions?

  • I don’t remember! Next Cloud is pretty sprawling with many optional modules and I don’t remember all what they have enabled. I think you would not want anonymous people to edit a calendar because it would be too easy to vandalize. Although you know what you could do if you truely want publically editable would be to use something like Ethercalc (open source google sheets, there are many instances) or a google doc alternative (etherpad, cryptpad, or many others) and have a public document. They allow anon editing with rollbacks when needed. Do you actually need it to be a calendar? If not there are approx 10000 options.

If you want voting in a vaguely calendar-type format, you are looking for doodle or an alternative. Doodle is a tool to vote on meeting-type situations. I haven’t used it in a few years. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is now “enshitified” as the olds say. But there are various knock offs.

The Chatons website has a list of hosts, mainly for Framadate which is an open source doodle-type software. But you should open those drop down menus if that’s not right because they know about a lot of stuff.

I wonder it this might be good for you: https://sondage.oisux.org/ it looks extremely minimal.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WYSIWYG

In computing, WYSIWYG (/ˈwɪziwɪɡ/ WIZ-ee-wig), an acronym for What You See Is What You Get,[1] refers to software which allows content to be edited in a form that resembles its appearance when printed or displayed as a finished product,[2] such as a printed document, web page, or slide presentation. … In general, WYSIWYG implies the ability to directly manipulate the layout of a document without having to type or remember names of layout commands.[4]

    History

Before the adoption of WYSIWYG techniques, … Users were required to enter special non-printing control codes (now referred to as markup code tags) to indicate that some text should be in boldface, italics, or a different typeface or size.

  • Sound good!

Don’t hesitate to contact any and all unions available to you. Even if they don’t seem like they typically organize your industry. They can tell you No but sometimes shops end up in a union that sounds kind of weird because it was the best fit. If there have been any local struggles you’ve heard of where it seemed like the union did a good job, contact them. Even if they are in a totally different industry you might get some intel on your options. And if you know anyone who is a member of any candidate unions, ask them what they think.

There is probably a District Labour Council for your area and they are probably worth talking to as they will know the lay of the land.

And of course when I say “you” I mean your committee because its important that these tasks be spread out democratically. Everyone needs to participate equally.

  • I and most other people understand this.

It doesn’t mean websites can’t do their best to help their users out.

No reason to make things easier for an adversary.

I feel like I’m here talking about treating municipal drinking water and you just wrote a long post explaining that not all diseases are transmissible via water. 30 years ago everyone knew that you can get the flu or cancer or eczema no matter how clean the water is… But all this eternal September riff raff thinks if you just clean the tap water all other problems magically vanish. Sigh.
