I’d say try reviving the group by posting there yourself for a while. There’s probably a few people who are still subscribed to it, so you’ll get more eyeballs right out of the box than you would starting a fresh one.
You’re free to make a new community if you want, but there are a couple things you could try first.
- you could contact the admins of the community instance and ask them if you can take over the dead community. A lot of times they’ll say yes, and they just make you the mod. If the community is on lemmy.world you can just go to the !support@lemmy.world community and make a post saying “requesting (name of the community)” and they’ll get back to you.
- another thing you could do is ask about it on the !comm_revival@lemmy.dbzer0.com (e: fixed link) community. That’s where people point out dead communities and talk about how to bring them back. you may find other people who want to help you, or they may suggest another alternative like a better instance to start it on, or an existing community that is thriving
Once you’ve taken over a community, you should make sure it doesn’t just die again. post there regularly and advertise it on the following locations:
- !communitypromo@lemmy.ca
- !newcommunities@discuss.online
- !newcommunities@lemmy.world
- any existing community that’s kinda related, or has folks you think will like it Make sure you post and advertise it during times when a lot of people are on, so folks who browse “new” will see it.

Instance admins can transfer ownership of communities, so if the existing one already has a good amount of subscribers I think I would try getting in contact with instance admins first.

The other option would be to take over the existing community, which can be helpful if a lot of people are subscribed already. That way you don’t have to build it up from scratch. You would contact the admins of the instance that it’s on, and they’ll make you a mod.
If the other one has a low subscriber count, then there’s no downside to just making it again

So you’re on lemmy.ca. But lemmy.ca does not know every single community that is made anywhere in the fediverse, because the creation of a new community is not automatically broadcast.
If a user on lemmy.ca accesses the new community, THEN all of a sudden lemmy.ca knows about it. But it doesn’t download all the old posts, it only gets the posts that are made after lemmy.ca found out about it.
So probably 5 months ago someone made the most recent post on yoga@lemmy.world, then a couple months after that someone on lemmy.ca heard about it and subscribed. But nobody posted anything to yoga@lemmy.world since then, so lemmy.ca’s view of yoga@lemmy.world has nothing on it.
!yoga@lemmy.world is the correct way to link to the community.

If you have a de facto dead community, any attempts to revive it (either via existing communities or via new ones) seem like good developments.
