Summary

Donald Trump suggested Canada could become the U.S.’s “51st state,” claiming it would benefit Canadians through lower taxes and military protection.

The remark follows tensions over Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, which shocked Canadian leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who likened it to betrayal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the annexation talk as unserious but unveiled a $1 billion border security plan to address U.S. concerns.

The escalating rhetoric, including insults from Trump ally Elon Musk, highlights strained Canada-U.S. relations ahead of Trump’s second term.

I don’t care if its a joke. Jokes about countries not being real, being artificial, questioning sovereignty. all of that became completely unfunny after Feb 24 2022

the dichotimy of the US and Canada, is eerily similar to that of Russia and Ukraine.

Neighbors, Cultural ties, History of imperialism attempted or otherwise, Tinpot expansionist ambitions for no better reason than Russkiy Mir / Manifest Destiny / DURR LINES ON MAPS BIGGER.

So what are we going to do about it? Nukes?

If he actually had left NATO the problem would have solved itself, but he’s gone back on that. As it is he could just kind of take the country.

Ignore what he says. This is all distraction and engagement/attention capital. Only what he does matters. Come on people, this isn’t our first Trump presidency. We know how he operates.

Been awhile since the Canadians burnt down the white house. USA might need another spanking to remind them about how this went last time.

I don’t think he realises how opposed Canadians are to this idea. Trudeau has been keeping quiet about this because they don’t want to feed the troll. Meanwhile this orange moron thinks this means we’re on board with this idea.

Canada might not be as wealthy as the US and might be in a housing crisis, but we still see the US as a dystopia for anyone who isn’t the richest 5%.

He does not give one shit what Canadians or anyone else thinks of this “idea.” It’s not even a fully formed thought, it’s just something he said while he was confused, and he covered by acting like he was making a suggestion. The guy has dementia, and he’s surrounded by sycophants.

Until he’s dead, in jail or in a retirement home for senile people I will not dismiss the threat that he represents. He keeps talking about it and started to refer to Canada as “the State of Canada” without realizing how hostile and insulting this comes across as. He’s really thinking he can pull it off and this is scary. This motherfucker is going to use the crippling tariffs as leverage against Canada.

prefer the US become Canada’s 11th province

Whoa whoa; not all of it. Let the adjacent regions ask to be a province and we’ll see how ‘good’ a ‘fit’ they are. I mean, Cascadia will be a good fit, MAYBE some of their adjacents. East coast is hit-and-miss, but largely hit. The middle, though. Yeesh. Probation for sure.

Washington (or at least Seattle) seems somewhat compatible with BC. Montana is probably a reasonable match with Alberta and Saskatchewan.
North Dakota is far too MAGA to fit with the NDP voters in Manitoba.

Not sure how well the states bordering Ontario would get along with douggie ford’s government.

I doubt any of Quebec’s southern neighbors would be thrilled about having to learn French.

I get unreasonably indignant when a person or machine won’t accept my Canadian coins. It’s totally fair since it’s “foreign currency”, but … C’mon. Not accepting Canadian quarters is just petty.

I’ll put a fancy old person and a loon on some coins for better healthcare.

At this point, a functioning democracy with a symbolic regent is a hell of a lot more grounded than a broken democracy trying to find its way to something a little more autocratic.

I’m not looking forward to 4 more years of this dementia riddled jackoff. I still don’t understand why we treated his coup attempt with kid gloves in the first place? Brazil has lived under brutal authoritarian regimes before, and took steps to stamp out the attempted coup by bolsonaro. We should have immediately arrested Trump, and co. Jan 6th was a distraction for the organized attempt behind the scenes. He’ll, trump fired a bunch of pentagon generals trying to find someone who would institute martial law for him.
