  • It’s probably worse living with chuds but the libs I live with are, of course, insufferable right now and I must ventpost for the sake of my sanity.

I can tell they respect my opinion, and they aren’t idiots, but at this moment it means they want to hear me echo their enthusiasm and when I don’t they are upset with me. And I’ll admit it does drive me nuts to see them march around as the self-appointed warriors of Good and Reasonable Opinions while also having a huge Gaza-shaped blind spot. I’ll admit it’s probably not easy to force oneself to think soberly when the smell of victory is in the air but I think they can detect how appalled I am to see them just handwave away an ongoing genocide. I guess I can just hope that maybe the reason they keep probing me about it is because they feel that contradiction and they’re hoping to discover a way to resolve it without having to admit they’re being immature (ironic because they are older than I am)

Naked mole rats are considered an example of a truly “eusocial” mammal analogue to ants. More evidence for the idea that social behavior/societal grouping, once established in a species, characterizes it more potently than just about anything else in its genetic history. Chimps might be our closest genetic relatives, but the way we live and think is probably much more similar to these guys.

Unto Others has a great section about this. In a bunch of studied tribes who live generally pre-industrial lifestyles, the anthropologists were interested in how they “organize” big projects like building a house, and when they watched them, wondered what made them so willing to just do it.

Long story short, they saw how the kids watched them and subsequently “played” at doing things like building houses, carrying things together, etc. They essentially concluded that the “work” they did was understood more like play–that without any coercion to labor beyond meeting their needs, they were surprisingly eager to do that boring stuff because they made it into the day’s activity rather than grinding “work.”

TL;DR unalienated labor schniff and so on

  • I’m stuck here too on a sort of moral ledge with the idea that some people are just bad on an essential level behind me, and with the ocean of “people are products of their societies and you are surrounded by twisted victims while also being one of them” in front of me.

I am not sure I have the emotional constitution to face the ocean and try to understand it tbh, and it frightens me even more to think of getting lost in there and being wrong, rendering all that effort to understand some better nature of my species wasted on those who would spit my faith in them back at me anyway.

  • Is there some kind of funky socioeconomic interaction I’m not aware of and am misinformed about, or is Australia terrifyingly and publically hostile to immigrants? And I don’t just mean the familiar sort of reactionary “fuck off we’re full” shit

From what I can tell, the anti-immigration libs in Australia are saying that immigrants are being lured in by corporations to provide cheap labor which is driving down wages, and so their solution is to just…repel the immigrants? That does not seem to be addressing the root of the problem m8s

(Yes this is because I watched a Boy_Boy vid that had friendlyjordies in it and so I checked out said affable jordle’s vids)

Like the ONE THING I can maybe agree with is that I don’t want to see the delicate ecosystem of Australia get further developed to support expolitative businesses but thinking that immigrants is the problem seems like some classic USA hog thought
