Fedora’s nice! I was on it for a long time before switching to a fork called Nobara, which is still just Fedora but with some tweaks for gaming.

I’ve never tried Mint but I know it’s supposed to give a Windows-like appearance. So maybe you’ll be more at home with KDE than GNOME, though both are great.

Another thing to remember is Fedora does minor updates pretty often but it doesn’t force you to update. It’s up to you to choose when to update it. I’m not talking about the full OS upgrade like going from Fedora 39 to Fedora 40 which happens every few months etc. So make sure to just do an update once a week or every coup of weeks or something. The OS will remind you, too so no need to worry.

Also, a big difference is apt-get is gonna change to dnf when you use the terminal to get packages. When you go online to find stuff to find apps to download or commands to run, you’ll need to find the Fedora specific versions or ask for them. A lot provide for both Ubuntu and Fedora but Fedora is smaller than Ubuntu, so you will see some things online that just don’t have any instructions for Fedora. So you’ll have to ask around.

Genuine question - what happens to the workers who get replaced? I know in Western countries, we’d all be left jobless (leading to a crisis in capitalism). But even with this high a rate of replacement, it doesn’t seem like China’s going through an unemployment crisis or that the masses are resentful of the jobs they are losing. So something must be different. For a while I can imagine the workers fired from one plant can go to another, but given this has been a priority for the govt. for close to a decade at this point, there has to be something more substantial being done for the people. Are they in mass moving into the service sector? That cannot be sustainable solution. And I can’t imagine agriculture itself isn’t being automated either, if some are moving back to the villages. Others might move to higher-tier manufacturing that isn’t replaced as of yet…but none of these feel like the solution. I’m just reminded of the fact that machines cannot produce value, only human labor can, and am just left wondering what’s happening.

Whew that is scaaary. I mean, I think we all know on some level that all our internet activity is being tracked. But to go from that to this specific is kinda chilling.

Hot Weather: This argument might have been valid like a century ago but it clearly hasn’t been valid for billions of people around the world (including parts of the US) that regularly sees temperature crossing 38 C (100 F) in the summer. This includes Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia and I’m sure more places too.

Like, it’s not extreme if it’s expected every year. And I’m not taking 39 C. Where I lived, it reached 49 C (120 F) every single summer. That is summer.

Cold Weather: And this is also true for so many people around the world who live in places where temperature, every winter, goes below -18 C (0 F). Like, that’s not a billion people, but that’s still in the millions (Canada, Russia, Scandinavia etc.) We’d have to use the - sign every winter no matter which system we use, Celsius or Fahrenheit. Just like the billion+ people I talked about above.

People used to the Celsius system, especially those living in areas where it frequently goes below freezing, are well versed with the - symbol. We know the difference between -5 and -10 like we know between 0 and 5.

Again, Americans can keep their F and their LBs and their Miles and their every other unique charm. But it’s also funny when they try to prove that it’s somehow better or more natural. Like, it’s natural and rational to you.

Honestly? I’ve only lived in countries with Celsius and Celsius is how I feel. I know exactly how hot or cold a day is gonna be if I look up the temperature. Thats how I know what clothes to wear!!! But Fahrenheit confuses the shit out of me. Every time I visit the US, I always convert the temp back to Celsius when someone tells me the temp.

I know Fahrenheit has more degrees and that can give you more datapoints. But cmon. The temp only goes up to, like, 50 C anyways lol. How many degrees do you need 🤣. Can you really differentiate between 61 and 62 F? Now, 60 to 65 F might be believable, but that’s like 15 to 18 C so, that much difference is shown even in Celsius.

I’m not saying Celsius is better, or that Americans should convert to it. Actually, if I was God-Emperor, I’d force us all to use Kelvin, given it begins with Absolute Zero and I’m a sucker for shit like that.

But variety is the spice of life. For Americans, Fahrenheit is how they feel. For most of the rest of us, it’s Celsius.

Well, I got into them when I was younger. My school required a MacBook and when I started using one, I found it way cooler than my clunky Windows laptop. Part of that was probably the price, but it was also the OS. It was really smooth - and I freaking fell in love with the touchpad gestures. Then I got an iPhone, an iPad etc.

Overtime, I moved away from an Apple only ecosystem. Now I use Linux on an XPS. I also use a Galaxy Tab instead - iPad, while powerful, is really hampered by its OS. Galaxy Tab is far more powerful and capable of being an actual laptop replacement, at least for me.

But I still use an iPhone. I find it a lot easier to deal with than Android. I tried the latter in the past, btw. But I don’t need customization on my phone, unlike with my laptop or tablet. So, for my headphones, I got the AirPods. The connection between the iPhone and AirPods is really good.

Will my next phone be an iPhone. I dunno. There are some really interesting Android phones out there, and the platform seems more mature now with many companies offering a simple UI that doesn’t do too much - I still keep up with it all. I liked the OnePlus Fold that came out recently, for example.

I’ll admit, I’m not your average Apple user. I made a very deliberate choice to not be tied down to Apple. I’ve taken conscious actions to have different OSes and software on different devices and not be locked down by any one company. I use FOSS wherever I can, and moved away from all the default apps pushed by Apple, Samsung etc. long ago. It’s also why I won’t get a Galaxy phone - I already have the tablet. The only concession I allowed was the AirPods.

But I can tell you another example. Over the years, my father has needed new products. And every time I’ve gotten him Apple products. Now, he has an all Apple setup. MacBook, iPad, iPhone, AirPods. Why? Because I’ve seen him use Windows laptops and Android phones in the past. I know just how many problems he’s had with them - and how much I had to help him with them. Now that he has an all Apple set up, everything is dead simple for him. People underestimate this.

Like… come the fuck on. Something clearly major fucked up is going on at a systemic fucking level here. I’m betting corruption. No doubt the drivers were not 100% innocent. But they’re dead so they’re being turned into the scapegoats, so people don’t look into all these other incidents. Many countries have very large and extensively used railway systems that don’t experience deadly crashes on the daily. Indians need to hold their politicians accountable.

They got a lawyer. The lawyer looked at their books and their records and recommended they settle asap. Yuzu devs probably had DMs openly talking about piracy of TotK being good for Yuzu, which would come out in discovery. Also, the meat of this case hinged on pretty technical aspects around Yuzu breaking Nintendo’s hardware protections on the Switch. Arguing that they had the right to do so would be possible (unlike what Nintendo and its shills would have you believe) but it would be long and expensive. Coupled with the (probable) DMs of piracy, going to court and losing would be a major risk.

What this doesn’t mean is that emulation is illegal - because this didn’t go to court. That’s exactly what I was pointing out in this comment, when I was ranting against Twitter geniuses who expected Yuzu to fucking take Nintendo to court and WIN.
