  • Depends on the content.

Recently I was reading on r/modcoord about the r/canning mod team being served the adminmail of doom. The top mod there explained that they are a few individuals willing to moderate that particular sub because they are savvy enough to moderate it properly. As in, if you say something wrong on this sub it could end up with people dead of botulism because of bad advice.

Another example which I’m more involded in is r/electronic_cigarette. The sub has a ton of relevant advice, reviews and recipes so moving its content would instantaneously bring up its knowledge base to the fediverse.

Now if it’s just to fill the place with casual chitchat oh well, it’ll happen soon anyway. Won’t be a major game changer if some of it is imported from reddit.

There is one thing though we probably should pay attention to: is it legal? How far does reddit “own” the content we bring and can they cause mischief and lawsuits for plagiarism for such imported content?

  • There’s something I find quite concerning: on a recent poll on r/redditalternatives the “best” alternative by a large amount is squabbles.io, then beehaw, fediverse “regular” instances (kbin, lemmy) only coming in 3rd and 4th position.

If that poll really reflects the opinion of the average reddit Joe (I tend to take external polls with a grain of salt as they can easily be brigaded), not only people are voting en masse for a centralized solution - again, but also they’re favoring the maverick fediverse instance over proper ones.

Even more concerning, this snippet taken from squabbles.io’s privacy policy:

    Disclosure of Information
We may share your personal information in the following circumstances:

With your consent or as otherwise necessary to provide our services
With trusted third-party service providers who assist us in operating our website and services
When required by law, or in response to a valid legal request
In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case your information may be transferred to the acquiring entity

To put it bluntly: brace yourselves, we will sell your data (and likely the company) as soon as we get enough dough from it.

  • 58 with a similar background (except that I’m a man) and I have no intention to stop.

I’m essentially a PC gamer but had a few game consoles too (until Dreamcast), which I ditched as soon as PCs were able to provide a decent platform for modern gaming. I’m a modder and occasionally a tweaker so I prefer having total control over my gaming environment than being restricted by a closed system console.

I love many game genres, my favorites being immersive open worlds and strategic action and stealth games (à la Ghost Recon Wildlands or Mass Effect) but I don’t limit myself to those. Each genre brings its own amusement and interest, either honing your reflexes or challenging your cooperation skills or your memory.

And above all, gaming is fun!

There is no age cut off for enjoying challenging both your mind and reflexes, nor to have fun. And imho enjoying gaming at our ages is one of the many symptoms of still being a young soul.
