  • Yo, Black Mesa fucking rocks as a remake. I replayed for the first time since a “lost” playthrough back in late 2021, and it still astounds me. This is a true Half-Life game, it makes the world feel dynamic and special like the first game was intended to be. Lemme tell you an example, minor spoiler for On A Rail ahead, I guess

    minor spoiler

In an office next to the rails, before the rocket silo, you come across a security guard, I managed to keep him alive through the entire fight in the rail yard, and I was shocked when he jumped onto the tram. As we kept going, he started commenting on the fights he observed the soldiers having with some zombies, when we got to the top, he told me he’d guard the area as I released the clamps on the rocket. Partway down, a gunfight ensues upstairs between the guard and a HECU grunt, and I rush back upstairs. The poor guy was mortally wounded, letting out on last snarky remark against the grunt he killed before perishing. Now why is this special? Cause I’ve gone up this silo 3 times before in misc playthroughs, and never seen this.

Stopping and reading whiteboards, looking at pictures, finding little jokes here and there, it’s very good. This fan-remake is a true labor of love, and a great Half-Life game, might even be the best, and that’s a though competition between Black Mesa and Entropy: Zero 2. (E:Z 2 is by far the most creative, but it’s also not a remake, for that matter.)

Edit: Condition Zero is a fuckin’ Counter Strike game, I meant Entropy: Zero 2, My bad.
