  • AFAIK Chinese piracy is a different culture, its mostly done on private/secret forums not with the same public torrent/archive methods we use. Also I’m confident hosting a website inside China is no simple matter given the regulations, certainly it would be trivial for authorities to notice the foreign traffic.

Which leads to the final point, the firewall is also to prevent exactly this.

The CPC isn’t going to act on a shared principle of fuck the west here, on the contrary they’d see hosting western piracy content as a potential threat given it bypasses the firewall.

  • If you need something related to daily life/hobby then use “site:reddit.com [search here]” honestly reddit still contains decent results about niche topics.

If you are searching for news items you almost need to use “before:[date]” for better context otherwise its impossible to find useful information, every news article is filled with SEO mumbo jambo and makes every news about a topic today the same as it was years ago and that is not what you want.

Otherwise unless you end up searching for something with a reasonable wikipedia page that is your destination most of the time because every other alternative is as bad or worse.

  • I’m not sure if regular libs have been migrating to Lemmy leaving only the worst posters or if they are just becoming shittier.

Oh it is pretty clear now libs were never going to actually support real climate activism in the long run, anything that actualy threatens to disrupt their comfortable lives and treats.

I think also its just the fact any real climate action is inherently against the liberal democracy that continues to fail despite constantly promising e.g all the climate accords. The libs will naturally see protests against this inaction as a protest against democracy therefore everyone will be declared eco-fascists/tankies or worse.

  • Respectfuly, it is painful to read shit like this from uninformed people.

Here try googling this “Ukraine counter offensive goal crimea before:2023-07-01”(without quotes), just 3 random examples.

Zelensky signaled Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russia is underway. Here’s what to expect

In terms of its goals, Kyiv has consistently said that it wants to recapture all of the territory controlled by Russia. In an address earlier this year Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that included Crimea.

“It is not an intention, it is our land. Crimea is our sea and our mountains,” Zelensky said.

Ukraine ‘ready’ to talk to Russia on Crimea if counteroffensive succeeds lol lmao

    Ukraine’s counteroffensive: Goals, opportunities, risks

In September 2022, in his only programmatic paper so far, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Lieutenant General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi offered only a rough sketch of how a Ukrainian counteroffensive might look. In the paper, he spoke of “several resolute, ideally simultaneous counterattacks.” One strategically crucial target Zaluzhnyi mentioned was the Crimean peninsula, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014. In Kyiv, all agree this is the main direction Ukraine should focus its efforts. But they are also expecting surprises and deceptive maneuvers. Many, however, doubt Ukraine has enough equipment and fighting power to regain the peninsula.

Even western media tried to downplay it casting doubt from the beginning but the point I highlight is undeniably the planned goal was not achieved and it wont be achieved. Everyone would call that a failure.

But even the fucking Nazis can’t agree on their own narrative and they’re just coping now

Ukraine counteroffensive creeps ahead, measured in blood exactly 2 months ago, July 1st 2023

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the counteroffensive was “slower than desired”, without getting too specific. Ukraine says it has recaptured a cluster of villages in operations that liberated 130 square km (50 square miles) in the south, but this is a small percentage of the total territory held by Russia.

Go tell Zelensky to shut the fuck up, oh wait.

  • I guess I have a low bar but TNG Q episodes were all very funny, Deja Q if I were to say #1.

I’m an atheist though so I wont get scared by ghosts/horror stuff, but I guess the “worst feeling” moment was actualy TNG Best of Both worlds. I think the realization that the doomsday scenario is actually coming, it is real and inevitable, our chances are extremely low, the very moody soundtrack made it a very sober experience for me the first few times I watched it.

  • In Trek we were lucky that our little corner had friendly/tolerable aliens and specifically that it was the Vulcan first contact.

Unfortunately in our reality we are 99.99999% for sure alone and the end result of all that suffering, if we manage to achieve near FTL travel we will just devolve into some nihilistic hyper capitalism, those stupid articles “this asteroid is worth 1 trillion USD in minerals” are already being published unironically.

  • I wasn’t too bothered about tech bros shanking each other in name of ethics in tech YouTubing.

That is a weird way to try and sound superior and dismissive about the original issue(GN video), like I too couldn’t care less about the smol cute business shit behind that waterblock company but even then the psychopathic behavior behind pretending you have an agreement, then screwing it up, then auctioning it and then still having the narcissism of “we auctioned not sold it” BS alone is enough to put him out of any serious business for life and honestly probably even legal action.

It was far beyond just “drama”.

  • Much of the media is currently going down the same path, refining itself out of existence. Aside from the New Yorker’s fussy umlauts, there’s simply nothing to distinguish any one publication from any other. (And platforms like this one are not an alternative to the crisis-stricken media, just a further acceleration in the process.) The same thing is happening everywhere, to everyone. The more you relentlessly optimise your network-facing self, the more you chase the last globs of loose attention, the more frazzled we all become, and the less anyone will be able to sustain any interest at all.7

Literaly the Ukraine war and western media for the entire year.

Now, large companies are cutting out their online advertising budgets entirely, and seeing no change whatsoever to their bottom line. One study found that algorithmically targeted advertising performed worse than ads selected at random. This is what sustains the entire media, provides 80% of Google’s income and 99% of Facebook’s, and it’s made of magic beans.

I learned something new. I mean not realy of course with the single digit click through rates and all it was obvious since 2005 that the advertising industry was all about chasing the long tail and “conversions” i.e the one idiot boomer that will load one of those 2008 style pages where you can spend $199 and get a worthless “premium” product on a credit card. Realy you can go to the warriors forum and learn how to make one of those too and if the year was 2012 you could probably make a few hundred at least if you pick the right niches.

But on the other hand I didn’t really it was this bad for the big corporations too.
