Right now images in the comments are fixed to the thread width and I can’t open them or zoom in to see detail.

Yes, this is something I would also like. Sometimes the images in comments are something I would like to save and/or share.
This, plus the ability to open the main post and scroll sideways to view images in the post (as if they were galleries). That would be fantastic!
