I think that depends on the environment, so if you are decreeing a univeraal law, I would disagree.

it’s not about reclusion, it’s about not being bossed around. i’ll show up on a work function if it’s relevant. if not, it’s literally blocking me from doing my job. same with forced-camera-on meetings. half of them i do work on the side because the meeting doesn’t involve me unless it requires a detail i’m well versed in, which means i’d be sitting there silent for half an hour while everyone else can stare into my home. having your camera on isn’t about professionalism or camaraderie, it’s about control.

That autonomy does sound nice, but it still seems dependent on the environment whether or not participation/engagement is voluntary.

Most of my meetings dont require cameras, some do, because it can make sense to have them on like if im working with a large client or something.

Why would your client having more money make the camera requirement make sense? The quality of your work doesn’t change either way. Unless you’re teaching people sign language or something. Otherwise, it’s just about your boss exerting control over you.

It establishes trust. It can help differentiate people if you arent great with names. It can show them you care about the meeting. It can reinforce accountability when you know you will be updating someone face to face.

I understand the stance that these things seem superficial but i think thay can be true or false depending on who you are working with, the industry you are working in, and your position.

To be clear, I think it would awesome to not have these things be a factor.
