Presidents appoint thousands of unelected people to various positions at the start of an administration. When you’re voting for a President, part of it is trusting their judgement as to who they’ll pick. I don’t think it should be a surprise to anyone that Trump would appoint a bunch of batshit crazy people to various positions, it’s what happened last time.
Maybe Fauci isn’t the best example of that tho, as he’s been an apolitical career official for decades, as you said.
