Then run for election. That’s the point of democracy. If our leaders are bad, there’s no one to blame but ourselves.

Obligatory addendum: A downvote does not constitute a counter-argument.

The problem is countries like Hungary, where 70% of the population is rural, don’t speak a word of English and all they consume is state controlled terrestrial media

Agreed, it’s definitely a problem. And in fact it’s even worse because it turns out that today’s supposedly progressive and well-informed youngsters in fact get their news from TikTok and tend to vote for authoritarian populists even in western Europe.

Again: downvoting facts, sticking one’s fingers in one’s ears and going “lalalalala”, does not make the facts go away. It is an inconvenient fact that far-right parties across Europe are doing particularly well among young voters.

I find it kind of ironic how you complain about downvotes while supporting democracy. I’m not saying whether I agree or disagree with you, I’m not saying either if I think you are right or wrong. But just like in a democracy votes represent the opinion of those who decided to vote. Being right won’t mean you get the votes. You should just accept them and stop complaining about them.

No, adding something useful to the discussion should get you a vote. The fact that other idiots agree with you does not magically make your contribution thoughtful, or insightful, or productive in any other way.

You can’t run for politics unless you’re already a known figure with a wide reach. Please don’t pretend that our iteration of democracy isn’t extremely insular and gatekept.

You make it sound like it’s trivial to get a position of political power when said position is already being vied for by several people, many of which have way more money and resources than the average lemming

I’m not educated enough to have an opinion on this, but is the EU different from other places in terms of requiring a lot of expensive campaigning to have any chance to win?

Yes, it’s very different from the USA. Campaign spending is tightly limited. In most EU countries, political parties get the majority of their funding from the state, paid on the basis of past election results.
