To be fair, many people do not understand Dunkirk. The majority of the French Army was collapsing under the weight of bad communications and constant envelopment. The French near the Western Coast though held the Germans back specifically so the British could attempt an evacuation. They were cut off and surrounded, they knew that once the British got out they would not be able to escape.
They were the very definition of lions led by donkeys.
