Big budget, A-list actors, lots of marketing, great movie. Is anyone here not aware of Dredd?
I keep trying to come up with recommendations for cyberpunk movies that people might not have seen. Yet most obscure movies are obscure for a reason. It’s usually “this movie is good but ____” or “it’s a fun movie if you can ignore ____” So for most of these recommendations, I hesitate to say “this movie is awesome and you need to see it!” because I don’t want to mislead anyone. Of course, this means all the movies that I truly do think are awesome I assume everyone has already seen and I don’t need to suggest them.
But maybe enough time has passed that some people here haven’t seen Dredd? Well, if you haven’t, you should. It’s awesome. Just don’t watch the 1995 Judge Dredd movie with Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider because that one is not good.

Of course, I say everyone should watch Dredd but it isn’t streaming anywhere… except DirecTV I guess, if that counts. But I made a post earlier where I mentioned I’ve been avoiding recommending movies that you can’t watch online and some people said I should recommend them anyway. So here we are.
We’re actually closer in time today to Dredd (2012) than Dredd (2012) was from when the pyramids were built in ancient Egypt.
Huh, the more you know.

Just don’t watch the 1995 Judge Dredd
Careful now! Thems fightin words where I’m from! Of course I see this post the day after I finish watching both back to back. ‘95 Judge Dredd is by no means a great movie but it is a fun movie. Most action movies released in the 90’s had some sort of comic relief, as was the fashion at the time, thus it was my introduction to Rob Schneider. Movies back then didn’t get as dark/serious as they do today because they just weren’t profitable. Having watched it yesterday, I do admit a lot of it is corny, but not terribly unwatchable, it’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
They’re two very different films and both stand fine on their own within their eras.
As for Dredd, I friggin love that movie. The first time I watched it though was in theaters and thought it was ok. I wasn’t sure what I didn’t like from it. Then I watched it on a decent 4k TV with HDR and my mind was blown, a totally different experience from theaters. Clearly cinema projectors had not caught up with 4k yet so it translated into a bland and flat experience in theaters. The visuals are straight up stunning and vivid throughout in the proper viewing environment. The pacing, the story, the actors, cinematography, it all pops and gets the chef’s kiss from me. The movie is a delicious experience.
Damn I love this movie! I was really hoping for a sequel, with the decades of comics to work from there’s no shortage of stories to build off of, but I guess it isn’t in the cards…
Lots of extremely bad marketing. I still can’t believe they chose to call and advertise this as DREDD 3D! It was like a bad 90s commercial. I was instantly off put by the marketing and was definitely their core target demo for this film. I never saw/see movies in 3D hate it, always have and they just leaned into the 3D as like the biggest part of the movie. It was all about how awesome the effects and 3D was going to be…
Yeah I spent a long time thinking it was yet another shitty 3D blockbuster movie until a roommate basically forced me to watch it
My first ever audition was for Dredd. I really wish I didn’t blow it. It would have been awesome to be a part of it.
I doubt you “blew it,” there was probably just a lot of competition
This is nearly a perfect movie, for what that’s worth. Same as T2, There Will be Blood, and No Country for Old Men (though it’s nothing like any of the three). They just plain nailed it.

This movie uses faces as a theme but I’ve never quite made a comprehensive theory about it.
The criminals often have distinguishing facial characteristics. Mama has a big scar, her hacker has giant eyes, a lot of the gang members have facial scars or tattoos. But then theres Dredd who has no face. Much of the violence done is to faces as well, lots of scenes of people shot or smacked in the head.
Something about Dredd representing cold, faceless bureaucracy

CITIZENS OF PEACH TREES. THIS IS THE LAW.
2023 - 2012 = 13
I believe it.
That is some crazy math.
Tbf, that is an accurate portrayal of the Mega-City One educational system.
Can’t believe the original Dredd is almost 30 years old. A guilty pleasure I hold dearly to my heart. I am the Law!
I love both for different reasons. But when my dog is ignoring me and not doing what I asked him to do, I am guaranteed to yell that line through the side of my mouth. It’s tradition.
That was such a surprisingly good movie, and is also generally regarded as such. No clue what went wrong with the marketing or whatever that it didn’t get much traction.
I guess it was always destined to be a cult classic for fans of the genre - it’s not exactly super-accessible bombastic popcorn material like Marvel stuff.
This movie had marketing?
I loved the movie but I thought there was no marketing for it to be honest; I literally discovered the movie existed by accident when I was passing through the theater and saw a movie poster for it and decided I had to see it that night. I loved the movie but they could’ve advertised its existence a lot better.
Loved this movie. Watched it a few months ago, just re-watched it Tuesday. Good on so many levels. (Definitely 100) ;)
Fantastic movie. Amazing use of slow motion.
