Scheduling it during an election year guarantees the DNC will attempt to undermine and dismantle it in the intervening 4 years under the cover of the second term carte blanche and if Trump wins then the state’s urge to deploy the Supreme Court hammer down on the concept of unionism increases

Interesting strategy, I assume the union leadership understand this move falls outside of the electoral anti-Trump DNC/Union consortium that’s defined labor talk these last 4 years, this is throwing down the gauntlet and a direct challenge to the state, a state that will be even more decomposed in 4 years

This has the potential to be the biggest Pikachu face since the PATCO Strike or the funniest series of happy accidents

They’re trying to get as many unions as possible to have their contracts expire in 2028, so strikes will happen simultaneously without violating the law against solidarity strikes

This general strike was announced in October 2023 after the UAW had just finished striking to secured a new contract. The UAW received the best contract in decades, which includes COLA and the right to strike over plant closures, as well as the largest wage increases in the industry, to the extent the non-union plants had to raise wages to prevent people from quitting. UAW will strike before 2028 if the car companies try to close any of the plants.

The UAW announced that it was their plan to grow union power over the next 5 years with the intention of having a powerful strike at the end of their contract. The UAW chose to end their contract on April 30, 2028 in reference to international labor day, May 1. The UAW said it was their intentional to unionize 2 or 3 more major car manufacturers before 2028. In April 2024, the UAW unionized the Volkswagen VW plant in Chattanooga TN. This shows that UAW is working towards their goal of expanding the size of their union beyond “The Big Three”: Ford, GM, Stellantis.

Today, the AFT union announced that they ending their contract on the same day as the UAW so that they can participate in the same strike. Which shows that the momentum towards this general strike is growing.

There will be a general strike organized every six months between now and then. They will be organized on Discord and will not have any support from or coordination with the major unions. Nothing will come of them. 2028, as planned by a major union, has a reasonable chance of success.

I’m not sure what you expect. You’re describing how most strikes happen. Unions have contracts that they follow. Strikes only tend to occur when the the company violates the contract or during the contract negotiation period. The UAW is asking that a bunch of unions align their contract expiration dates. Then the unions will make demands for new contracts. If the capitalists comply to the demands, then a strike won’t happen. If the capitalist don’t comply, then the strike will happen. The purpose of a general strike is greater bargaining power for the unions. The general strike is a threat. The goal is to receive concessions.

Almost every strike in the US is announced and voted on before it happens. Wildcat strikes (unauthorized strikes) were made illegal in the US in 1935.
