Kind of a misleading headline; he said that he couldn’t say no if they where to approach him, but he didn’t say he actively wants a movie.

I thought it was more of a “no, I definitely don’t want to sell the rights of a movie. Well, I guess maybe if Ghibli approached me it’d be hard to say no, but otherwise…”

A story of an enterprising young farmer min-maxing his late granpa’s farm, stocking barrels and casks all over municipal property, enlisting mythical creatures in providing unpaid labor.

A slice of life movie surrounding a young person quiting their office job for farming and meeting the mythical Junimo, while Joja trying to eliminate their competition, is just so fitting for Ghibli.

Ghibli? Sure. A nice feel good animated movie with loveable characters, definitely. It already has the anime feel to it.

Lynch? Idk about that… That’s the complete opposite end of the spectrum. I’d rather not feel weird and or confused by a Stardew movie, with a whole bunch of random obscure dark metaphors of farm life and the pitfalls of capitalism presented by heavy cinematography with very little dialogue that went way over budget.

Have you seen The Straight Story, by Lynch? It shows he has the range to make a beautiful, character-driven, slice of life story based off of Stardew Valley, but generally he doesn’t go that way.

I dunno, there’s some pretty bizarre and dark elements to Stardew that I think Lynch could really bring to life. Surface-level, Ghibli sounds like an excellent choice, but when you dive a bit deeper into Stardew, it does become a little bit Lynchian.

I could actually see it working.

Oh, lynch was the Mulholland drive guy wasn’t he? The most I ever enjoyed his work was the parody of it in psych. I dove deep on his Wikipedia once, I feel he’s on par with yoko Ono for artistic merit.

Let’s not get too big for our britches. Maybe with with a screen-writer to get something started and see how it goes. I don’t know that there’s much crossover potential, the game being as open play style as it is, and a movie being a directed narrative, I’m not sure the two harmonize

That’s generally been the case for most open choice games to movies. Unless there’s a solid story in the game that you can write a backstory to or fill in some gaps with a detailed movie I don’t see how it would work.

He’s written a lot of fan fic style stuff that’s present in the library as I’m sure you’ve seen. It’s a good light read within the context of the game, but yeah. I don’t think it’s enough to carry a movie.

Edit: I’ve removed myself from almost all media besides lemmy, do we have an eta on the haunted chocolatier game? Just wondering. I want him to develop it on his own timeline so we get something he’s proud of.

Edit 2: Just saw that there’s no release date so he can work in peace without all the deadline pressure. I’m glad he’s setting boundaries. I feel like we’ll get a better game in the long run because of it.

A slice of life story about a young protagonist that leaves home and finds themselves in an unknown town off the beaten path, resorting to a menial labor job to get by day-to-day while simultaneously working towards a larger goal that was beset upon them after the loss of a family member, occasionally dipping their toes in adventure between the 9-5 grind, all the while making friends and gaining the trust of the colorful and distinct locals and interacting with mysterious yet cutesy, unknowable spirit-like creatures?

Pop quiz, did I just describe Stardew valley, or Studio Guibli’s Spirited Away? I think there’s a little crossover lol

I just wanted Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro… I can picture Stardew Valley having the same wholesome vibe, where the stakes aren’t high or overly dramatic.

And the food, you know how good the food would look
