Is there a way to cast from my phone to a first gen chromecast without using mobile data? I thought I could do this by downloading films to my phone and then stream to cc, but it seems to throttle my tethering data.

So I’m not sure if I’m understanding the way this works: I thought it would just cast from phone to tv - but it’s using huge chunks of data for small films and my plan is limited.

Any advice on this or better ways to do this?

I haven’t used a first gen Chromecast in a long while but you should be able to hotspot to the Chromecast and use Localcast.

a chromecast is basically a Google Chrome browser on a stick, when you’re casting something, you send a url to the content to the chromecast and it loads that in its browser.

when you want to cast something without using data, the app pretty much has to be specially designed to do so. While I’m not entirely sure, as far as I know most apps don’t (netflix / YouTube). I think the app called localcast does it, but I’m not sure.

That’s a good explanation and confuses my thinking of how I wanted this to work ie: download some media, play it to tv, keep data allowance in check. So I downloaded a 100mb clip, started and after a couple of freezes find I’ve downed 300mb - so basically it’s ignoring my local copy and going off to get it again - and again - grrr!

I’ll check your recommendation out and see how it does the job - thanks for the info.
