I like to keep a calendar widget open on my Windows desktop since I have lots of room for it, but I usually enter events on my phone since it’s always with me. Is there an app combo that will sync? I can probably self-host if need be.
(I suspect this would be easier if I were running Linux on my desktop…)

Edit:
I should have mentioned that I don’t like the interface of the Google Calendar app on Android, and I’d prefer something third-party.

Windows calendar can sync with google calendar (or even be a font-end to it). This way you can use google calendar on your smartphone and on windows desktop.

Do you have pro? If so, it looks like Rainlendar supports syncing with “Google Calendar and Tasks, Office 365 / Outlook.com, CalDAV, Network Shared Calendars. Remember The Milk, Toodledo and MS Outlook”.

No, I’m running an ancient version of Rainlendar now. I’ll check out what’s current.
It looks like apps supporting CalDAV iare the way to go, maybe with the Synology Calendar server -since I have a Synology NAS.
