Artyom Sheikin, a member of the Russian parliament’s Federation Council, said on October 3 that the country’s Roskomnadzor media watchdog plans to block virtual private networks (VPNs) across the country as of March 1, 2024.

I suppose it was just a matter of time for this to happen, once the Russian government started cracking down on domestic Internet use in Russia.

China is also cracking down on VPNs and in many western countries there political ambitions to do so, because “good people have nothing to hide” and “it is okay if we do the surveillance because we arent autocracies like Russia so you have nothing to fear, wink wink”

Of course, it’s just that the Russian regime is going to black out all western sites that are not aligned with its propaganda and no reality other than the one fed by the government will be accessible by the people. This is 1984 shit.

I mean the cold war was a thing. Back then trade between systems was lower than today.

Sure, I’m talking about the total isolation of the population from other countries. Complete Internet control and censorship seems to lead in that direction.

Can you block things like TOR &I2P? Aren’t they designed to be very hard to block?
