Oh okay, put it back on.
I mean Obama removed some of the embargo restrictions and Trump put them back. I’m not certain putting much effort into that is worth it with dwindling time
What does this even really accomplish? Obama famously pushed for greater relations with Cuba, and Trump reversed all of that progress. Trump is very likely to reverse this as well.
If it was actually something important, and it was something Biden could do kinda whenever, what is the point of doing it now? If Biden had at least done it when he took office, we could have had a few years fostering relations again. Now, we’ll be lucky to have a month.
As much as I celebrate the removal of Cuba from this terror list, and the possible positive implications it will have for the people of Cuba, I am very well aware that that isn’t what any of these actions are about by either Biden, or what trump will do afterward.
Trump is very likely to reverse this as well.
And Trump will spend political capital to do it alienating groups that supported the removal of Cuba from the list.
If it was actually something important, and it was something Biden could do kinda whenever, what is the point of doing it now?
Because it forces trump to put it back on, and if trump does it immediately, the two events (Biden removing, Trump adding) will be highlighted in the minds of the electorate (who care about this subject).
If Biden had at least done it when he took office, we could have had a few years fostering relations again.
And Biden would have had to spend political capital to do it, alienating those that support restrictions on Cuba like the large voting block in Florida.
Now, we’ll be lucky to have a month.
Which is also part of the point of the timing I think. The GOP and trump will be forced to carry the title of putting the restriction on Cuba again.
This is all just political gamesmanship, not active policy agenda items. I still support the removal either way (and for any amount of time).
“I’m mad at this decisive step in the right direction.”
Common dreams is agitprop trash.
You literally post RFA, you have zero right to critique here about the quality of news sources.
How long until this gets removed by mods?
Reminder that the mods here forced to the community literal propaganda because “media bias check” said it was neutral and unbiased.
If you read the article it’s pretty clear that the shift isn’t what people are mad at. It’s that it didn’t happen sooner, perpetuating the suffering of millions by continuing US policy (including Trump’s legislation since 2017) for years at the expense of the entire population of Cuba. Not to mention in violation of International Law.
“It is important to note that the economic blockade and much of the dozen coercive measures that have been put into effect since 2017 remain in force to strengthen it, with full extraterritorial effect and in violation of international law and human rights of all Cubans,” the ministry added
Many progressives welcomed Biden’s shift. Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) said in a statement that Cuba’s SSOT designation “has only worsened life for the Cuban people without advancing U.S. interests” and “has made it harder for Cubans to access humanitarian aid, banking services, and the ability to travel abroad.” “It has also deepened food and medicine shortages and worsened the island’s energy crisis, especially after Hurricane Rafael,” she added. “These hardships have driven an unprecedented wave of migration, leading to the largest exodus in Cuba’s history.”
Alex Main, director of international policy at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, said Tuesday that “while this decision, which comes years after 80 members of Congress urged Biden to reverse Trump’s ‘total pressure’ approach should have been made long ago, it is better late than never.”
David Adler, the co-general coordinator at Progressive International, called the delisting “far too little, far too late.” “POTUS removing Cuba’s SSOT designation in the final days of his presidency only means one thing: He knew—from day one—that the designation was simply an excuse to punish the Cuban people,” Adler added. “But he maintained it anyway. Sickening.”
The peace group CodePink released a statement welcoming Biden’s shift, but adding that “it is unacceptable that it took this administration four years to address these injustices.” “President Biden made the inhumane decision every single day to not alleviate the suffering of millions of Cubans by keeping this designation in place,” the group added. “As we mark this overdue progress, we can only hope that the Trump administration does not reverse these crucial steps towards justice and diplomacy.”
Liberals can’t read. Otherwise they’d understand they arent on the left and agree with conservatives on the economy and most issues.
I submitted a proposal in my last week as president to end a 50 year blockade that should have ended 30 years ago when I was in Congress. Why aren’t people singing me praises?
Why didn’t Biden go back in a time machine to make you happy? I don’t know.
Probably because he knows there would still be something else you’ll bitch about anyway since you care more about whinging than solving problems.
if you want to understand why people are upset at the career politician, this is why. I think it’s a valid criticism and reflects generally on the Democratic party. If you disagree, that’s fine too.
Nobody is saying Biden should get a ticker tape parade for this. But if your first response to a good thing happening is “screw you, it should have happened sooner” no one is going to put any effort into doing the things you want.
I disagree, we have almost no recourse into actually changing the democratic party except telling them that they need to do better, and that they need to stop the ratcheting effect in favor of actual governance for the full 4 years. What prevented them from doing this 4 years ago? How will the proposal be any easier to pass now? Why are we willing to defend token gestures instead of telling them that it’s not enough?
No, no, see what it is, is a massive failure to give us everything we want, for free, right now.
I mean. Shauh. Pff. Whatev. At least i didn’t vote!
At least you didn’t have to move left.
Optimal considers Biden a great president, you can ignore anything they say. Literally posted propaganda as memes because compared to Trump he was a saint. Like anyone but Trump is.
and they say blue MAGA doesn’t exist…
Edit: I get the sentiment, but I also get the ‘vote blue no matter what’ mentality yielded 2 trump presidencies
People that can appreciate a good thing (even if they would have preferred it happening sooner) instead of complaining about the timing aren’t “bluemaga”.
People should appreciate progress and good things. The comment I was referring to is an example of blue maga either way. Considering the timing and the fact trump will just roll it back, are very valid criticisms. If he was in anyway serious about this, it could have happened long ago, and yet Biden has plenty of time to aid an active genocide.
