Chinese spies hacked the laptop of Els Van Hoof, the chairperson of the Belgian parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee in federal Parliament, back in 2021. Ms Van Hoof is believed to have opened several emails, allowing hackers to obtain her IP address.
“They wanted to intimidate me, but I’m not going to give in,” the lawmaker says.
It is the latest incident of recent cases of suspected Chinese espionage in Europe. Beijing has denied all such accusations.

“Allowing hackers to obtain her IP address” - and then? Just getting someone’s IP address shouldn’t get you very far. That’s what firewalls are for.
