Feeling ko di iaaddress ng movie yung excessive consumerism associated with Barbie. Baka parang SATC yung take nila, na yung fashion and accessories ay kailangan para sa self-actualization, na totoo naman, kaso dapat ibalanse sa climate change issues and how the fashion industry is a contributor to the problem.

I’m so demanding, I know. 😔 Naniniwala kasi ako sa kasabihang, “with great power comes great expectations.” So nag expect ang lola mo.

Knowing Gerwig, those themes might make it to the movie. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t either since hindi papayag Mattel na ilicense movie nila just to have their company criticized.

Here’s Phil Dy’s review of Barbie on Letterboxd.

            An excerpt of the review

Here is a movie that asks what it means to be human, filtering that question through the experiences of a doll living in a fantasy world built on the fantasy ideal represented by Barbie: a world of unrealistically beautiful women who can be anything. More specifically, it asks what it means to be a woman, bursting that fantasy ideal as it shuttles off its main character into our world, and discovers that what she thought she represented didn’t seem to mean a whole lot in a world mired in patriarchy.

Thanks. I expected that naman, given it’s Gerwig. At expected ko din na may commentary sa capitalism, given the characters in suits.

              I just want more 😔

Nakita ko uli si swimmer pool guy. I think he’s hot. It’s really the stamina, waking up early in the morning dedication and the discipline that does it for me, okay hahaha. Meron pa siyang timer while doing his laps.

Sa aking training program naman, my plan is to increase my laps per swimming workout. I do have skills I want to improve on. I’m not going hardcore intense because I want it to be fun for me and wala namang humahabol sakin. Sometimes pag ubos na ako ng hininga one lap is just me floating around the pool.

I like how they maintain the pool, hindi matapang yung chlorine. Walang super dry reaction yung skin at hair ko pagkatapos. Also a perk of being early in the morning: I have the cr all to myself tapos tuyo pa 😌 ako ang taga-binyag jk. I think I might stick to this pool 🤔

So malansa ung pancit canton na inalmusal namin today because we tried putting spanish style sardines and onions. Sana nag kalamansi kami to remove the smell before putting in the noodles.

Basically my tongue sang this to my brain as I soldiered on to finish the terror of a dish that we had created.

Surprisingly, masarap naman, medyo tumatambay lang talaga sa ilong ung lansa haha.

    Good morning phlemmings!

Props for experimenting! Inimagine ko parang pwede naman yung flavor, balancing the flavor lang siguro kailangan. Baka masyadong marami lang yung sardines, or maybe not the actual fish babawasan, pero yung oil (oil yun, ndi tomato sauce di ba?) ang babawasan.

Nacurious ako sa pancit canton, with its eggy flavor. Usually spaghetti ginagamit.

        Thank you!

I’m no expert cook, pero feel ko parang kaya. Masyado lang overpowering ung lansa kasi tinanggal lang namin ung juices and sinarsa ung onion and diretso lagay ng sardines. I have to admit ung texture reminded me of tuna pesto and bigla ako natakam.

Siguro nga it could either be too much sardines (this was just one can to 2 packs of pancit) as well.

Naka mental note na sya and fingers crossed when we do it again it turns out better.

I believe it could work. Ang issue talaga is ung lansa. Siguro kung nag calamansi kami para maging chillimansi pancit, it would’ve probably worked. Worth a try next time.

I rarely pull out my smartphone in public transport, I usually just wait it out and pay attention to my surroundings. The only time I do is when 1) I’m sitting down in the LRT and, 2) have to set up Moovit to vibrate when I’m near my stop. It then goes back to my bag for the duration of the trip and zippers are sealed with an s-biner.

I think I could only have an album or two worth of songs on the phone. That usually meant looping back to the first song on the list by the time I’m near the end of my nearly two hour commute.

I also preferred to rip my own CDs at 128kbps bit rate and could only afford to store them on a 256MB or 512MB Sony memory stick; hence the limited playlist.

Listening to music on my portable music player of choice (Walkman way back then, and then MP3 player).

Without music? Just staring out the window, or people watching. I sometimes guess where people are up to after they’ve gotten off. On the train, I sometimes try to guess someone’s station.

I sometimes read my school readings, but I tend to have really terrible headaches when I do this, so I just do this when I really have to.

    5/5 Oppenheimer

Despite watching it at a cinema with blurry PQ and a busted center channel that made following dialogue a chore.

Please make recommendations for the theater with the most pinsharp picture and clear audio. I would gladly trade the ATMOS shebang for both of those.

It doesn’t have to be IMAX. Wala naman masyado scenes na visual feast. It’s largely dialogue-driven.

Man, in the past few days and weeks, Filipino film nerds in twitter and reddit swore up and down that IMAX is the only way to watch the movie despite knowing that we’re getting the cropped version.

Having just finished watching it, I pretty much agree with your insights. Clear audio is a definitely a must as I definitely missed some lines.

I’m seriously considering going to Vista Mall for the IMAX (and expensive tickets) if it means getting the sharpest picture quality and clear audio, although I’m open to suggestions. I just feel ripped off spending P500 earlier. After Barbenheimer, I don’t think I’d be watching in the cinemas soon anyway. The better movies are in 2024 (Furiosa, the Gladiator sequel, Deadpool 3).

IMAX Evia was also one of my options, but apparently there are noticeable black spots in the screen, and the hefty price tag (apparently 1k for a ticket) are what threw me off.

If Interstellar was known to push substandard subwoofers to the breaking point, I’d say the first minute of Oppenheimer alone is enough to plausibly destroy it. Sound design is definitely the film’s strong point, not much the visuals which are few and nothing special.

That’s why I would want to watch it again on a cinema that could show everything clear and sharp. Parang nanood lang ako sa Skyworth na LCD with blacks showing up like grays and faces looking like it was upscaled from 480p. It really soured the viewing experience.
